The countdown is on! Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemptions for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are officially on their way out. As of 1 April 2025, these exemptions will no longer apply, so if you've been toying with the idea of upgrading to an electric vehicle (EV), now is the time.
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has set the deadline with the following caveats:
• Pre-April usage: Your PHEV must have been used, or at least available for use, before 1 April 2025.
• Binding commitment: A financially binding agreement to continue providing the vehicle for private use after this date is essential. Optional extensions don't count – it's got to be a firm commitment.
